Top Doctor Group Takes Stand On Climate Change

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- A top group of doctors is taking a stand on climate change.

America’s largest physician specialty group of physicians, the American College of Physicians (ACP), warns that climate change is already taking a toll on human health – and the worst is yet to come.

In a new paper published in Annals of Internal Medicine, the group points to evidence suggesting that we are already seeing an increase in extreme weather and respiratory illnesses (i.e. asthma and allergies), but that continued climate change may also extend to food security, water scarcity and the range of infectious diseases like malaria, cholera, dengue and chikungunya.

The authors also point out that the healthcare sector is the number two energy consumer in America, second only to the food industry, and should thus become more environmentally sustainable and energy efficient.
