Yogurt Lovers at Lower Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Han v. Vonno/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Of all the reasons to eat yogurt, this may be the best: it might help you avoid developing Type 2 diabetes.

After an 11-year study, British researchers learned that people who consumed four four-and-a-half-ounce servings of low-fat yogurt per week reduced the risk of contracting the most common form of diabetes by 24 percent than non-yogurt eaters.

In fact, people who replace a bag of chips with a cup of yogurt also lessened the chance of contracting the disease by 47 percent, according to researchers from the Medical Research Council at the University of Cambridge.

Although the study did not establish a firm cause-and-effect link, yogurt does contain vitamin K and probiotics that are known to combat the onset of diabetes.

Among the contributors to Type 2 diabetes are obesity and lack of physical activity. Left untreated, the disease can potentially lead to heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, eye damage blindness, impotence and stroke.
