Tennessee Walking Horse Abuser Fined and Sentenced to Probation

(CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.) -- An admitted Tennessee Walking Horse abuser was fined and sentenced to probation on Tuesday afternoon, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports.

U.S. District Judge Harry "Sandy" Mattice sentenced 60-year-old defendant Jackie McConnell to three years probation and a $75,000 fine for horse soring, the practice of chemically or mechanically abusing a horse's feet to alter its gait for walking horse competitions, the paper says.

McConnell pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy to violate the Horse Protection Act, a felony, according to the Free Press.
