Michigan Man Charged with Fatally Stabbing Elderly Mother

(DETROIT) -- A Michigan man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his elderly mother, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Alan Shields was arrested on Thursday for the stabbing death of 86-year-old Irene Shields in a Detroit-area home. Police found the woman's body on Wednesday. Alan Shields was arraigned Friday in Southgate District Court, the paper says.

A preliminary examination is scheduled for July 20.
