Michigan Ranks Number 5 on Nation's Obesity List

(DETROIT) -- A new report released Tuesday names Michigan the fifth-fattest state in the country, and indicates that three out of five Michiganders could be obese by 2030, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The annual F as in Fat report by the Trust for America Health shows that the number of obese adults in Michigan grew from 30.5 percent to 31.3 percent. Those extra pounds are expected to contribute to a number of new diagnoses related to obesity, such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and high blood pressure, the paper says.

The report says the obesity-related diagnoses will cause health care costs to increase 19 percent by 2030, according to the Free Press.
