Study: Michigan Running Out of Smart People
(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) -- Michigan has been ranked second in the list of states that are “running out of smart people.”
The list, comprised of 10 states, was published by 24/7 Wall St. The publication says the ranking was derived after observing a number of factors, including National Assessment of Educational Progress scores for math and reading in 2003 and 2009, and the amount of people in a state that had bachelor’s degrees.
The study found that Michigan’s eighth graders performed worse on reading tests in 2009 compared to 2003, and that the state lost 6.17 percent of its population with college degrees from 2000 to 2009, which, according to the website, was the largest decline of all states.
Colorado was ranked as number one on the list, while, Oklahoma, Idaho, and Alaska ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
