Mountain Meadows Site Designated National Historic Landmark

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced the designation of the Mountain Meadows Massacre site in Washington County as a National Historic Landmark

On September 11, 1857, 120 immigrants travelling in a wagon train from Arkansas to California were massacred in southern Utah by men associated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church funded and constructed a memorial site of the massacre in 1999.

Mountain Meadows was among 14 sites Salazar designated the status on Thursday.

Ozone Action Advisory Issued for Four Counties

(LITTLE ROCK, Ark.) -- An Ozone Action Advisory has been issued for four Arkansas counties for Friday.

The advisory was issued by the state’s Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Health and is in effect for Pulaski, Faulkner, Lonoke, and Saline counties.

An Ozone Action Advisory means that prolonged outdoor exertion is unhealthy for certain groups such as children and persons with asthma or other breathing problems.

Economic Report: Little Rock Outperforms Nation 

(LITTLE ROCK) -- The Little Rock zone of the Federal Reserves Eighth District outperformed the nation in all growth indicators, according to the Fed's Burgundy Book report.

The Little Rock zone of the Eighth District includes the majority of the state.

The report, which surveys regional economic conditions, shows Arkansas's annual growth of personal income rate was 3.6 percent and the nation's, 2.7 percent.

Police Arrest Murder Suspect

(LITTLE ROCK, Ark.) -- Police announced on Thursday afternoon that they have arrested a man in the shooting death of Edward Harris, Jr. at an apartment complex on June 12.

Brandon Irving, 26, was arrested by Little Rock Police for allegedly shooting Harris multiple times at the Asbury Park Apartments at 8500 Keller Drive. Harris, 24, was transported to Baptist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Irving is being held at a county jail.

Yarnell's Ice Cream Shuts Its Doors

(SEARCY, Ark.) -- Searcy-based Yarnell’s Premium Ice Cream announced that it was shutting down operations on Thursday.

In a press release, the company said that it is ceasing operations, after its board of directors voted on Wednesday to end production indefinitely. This decision means that Yarnell’s approximately 200 employees will be out of work.

Company CEO Christina Yarnell said management examined “many possible avenues” to keep the business open, but those efforts proved futile.
