Wal-Mart to Pay Over $81 Million After Pleading Guilty to Violations
(BENTONVILLE, Ark.) -- Guilty pleas by Wal-Mart on Tuesday will result in the company having to pay over $81 million for violations committed during its operations.
The Arkansas-based company has pled guilty to six counts of violating the Clean Water Act by illegally handling and disposing of hazardous materials at its retail stores, a release from the Department of Justice states. The guilty pleas came in cases filed by prosecutors in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
"As a result of the three criminal cases brought by the Justice Department, as well as a related civil case filed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Wal-Mart will pay approximately $81.6 million for its unlawful conduct," the Department of Justice said in a statement.
