Bill Passes to Use Medicaid Money to Buy Private Insurance

(LITTLE ROCK, Ark.) -- The Arkansas legislature passed a proposal on Wednesday that would use Medicaid money to buy private insurance, Bloomberg reports.

The legislation, which passed in the Senate 27-8, now goes to Gov. Mike Beebe, who is expected to sign it.

The move is viewed as a possible template for Republican-led states who want to avoid expansion of Medicaid.

President Obama reportedly gave Beebe informal approval that Arkansas could use money meant for Medicaid expansion to instead buy private coverage.

Lawmakers in Texas are reportedly considering a similar bill.
