Newport Beach Teacher Investigated for Battery

(LOS ANGELES) -- A Newport Beach teacher is being investigated after a physical altercation with a student.

Drama teacher Ron Martin of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District is under investigation, says the Los Angeles Times, after an allegation of battery. Police would not elaborate on the incident in question, but said that the conflict was not sexual and did not involve weapons.

The district is cooperating with police, the Times says.

Martin has previously been placed on administrative leave after a controversial performance of the play Rent at the school in 2009. Parents felt the play was inappropriate for students to perform. Martin later returned to work.
