Governor Wants Reduction of Toxic Flame Retardants in Furniture

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) -- California Governor Jerry Brown is calling for a reduction in the amount of toxic flame retardants in furniture sold in California.

Governor Brown has requested that the Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation conduct a review of California's flammability standards and recommend changes to reduce toxic flame retardants while ensuring that fire safety is maintained.

"Toxic flame retardants are found in everything from high chairs to couches and a growing body of evidence suggests that these chemicals harm human health and the environment," Brown said in a statement. "We must find better ways to meet fire safety standards by reducing and eliminating -- wherever possible -- dangerous chemicals."
