Three California Soldiers Die in Separate Incidents in Afghanistan

(WASHINGTON) -- On Monday, the Department of Defense announced the names of three soldiers from California who lost theirs lives in separate incidents while serving in Afghanistan.

The dead are: 1st Lt. Sean R. Jacobs, 23, of Redding, Pfc. Jose Oscar Belmontes, 28, of La Verne, and Spc. Benjamin C. Pleitez, 25, of Turlock.

Jacobs died last Thursday from injuries sustained after encountering an improvised explosive device in Khakrez, Afghanistan. Belmontes was killed by enemy small arms fire in Wardak province on Saturday. And a news release from the department said Pleitez died last Friday in Mazar E Sharif, but details of how he died were not immediately available.
