Authorities Conduct 'Operation Safe Highways'

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- State and local law enforcement agencies collaborated Wednesday to conduct Operation Safe Highways, an enforcement effort where commercial vehicles traveling throughout Tennessee were subject to random inspection.

The effort was organized by the state's Department of Safety and Homeland Security and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Officers carried out inspections at various scale complexes and also looked for seat belt violations, suspected drug or human trafficking, and hauling of dangerous materials, among other illegal activities.

"While the primary focus of Operation Safe Highways is enforcement, the other key element is creating awareness," Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons said in a statement. "We want the trucking industry to know it can help play an important role in ensuring the safety of the motoring public in Tennessee."
