Volkswagen Considers Adding New Car and Jobs to Tenn. Plant

(CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.) -- More jobs may be coming to Tennessee after Volkswagen announced Wednesday that it's considering building a new midsize utility vehicle for the U.S. market at a new assembly plant in Chattanooga.

Volkswagen is seeking a vehicle sized between the compact Tiguan and larger Touareg, according to published reports.

Should a new vehicle get approved, a third crew of 1,000 workers will be added to the two-shift operation, bringing the total plant’s employment to 3,500 by the fourth quarter.

Volkswagen’s Tennessee assembly plant opened in 2011.
