Goapele Talks Sexy Single "Play"; Debuts Remix EP
Facebook.com/GoapeleBay Area native Goapele announced on Tuesday the release of her latest EP, Play Remixed -- a new four-track set that features her Break of Dawn single "Play," re-imagined by producers Josh One, Beat Ventriloquists and Substratum. The song's musical treatment is brand new, but the remixes still feature the song's lyrics that are sexier than usual for a singer who has been described as "cautious and demure" and "a sheltered Rapunzel."
The soft-spoken singer, who issued her debut album Closer in 2001, tells ABC News Radio she's always believed in "the art of subtlety." But when she recorded "Play," she recalls thinking, "'This'll be different. I wonder how people are going to feel about this.'"
The song's lyrics are anything but shy: "Come here let me whisper in your ear/ Tell you how I'm about to make you feel/ I'm ready to play/ And we can play this game all day." So where did all that straightforwardness come from? "I think that I'm evolving and coming more into myself," Goapele says. "And so I feel more comfortable with sharing more sides. I feel like I've grown up." She says "Play" was crafted in the moment, "and, yeah -- just had to keep it real," she says with a laugh. Since the release of her 2005 album, Change It All, Goapele says she's grown up in other ways too, including starting a family. Her daughter, Bahia, is now 4-years-old.
Goapele is currently on tour. For more information, check out Goapele.com.
