Hit Songwriter Says, "Who Wants an F**king Katy Perry Record?"

EMI MusicIt's Perry vs. Perry!  Hitmaking songwriter Linda Perry, the former frontwoman of 4 Non Blondes who's gone on to write smashes for Christina Aguilera, Pink and Gwen Stefani, has been caught on video trashing Katy Perry's music.

Speaking backstage at the Ford Amphitheater in Hollywood, Linda said she has respect for Adele's album 21 because "it's a solid record and it's selling," noting that it proves that people are still interested in buying albums, and not just singles.  But then she goes on say that in her opinion, what's really hurting the music industry is the "crappy" music.  "Like, who wants a f**king Katy Perry record?,” said Linda.  "I’m sorry. You know, you’re gonna get the two songs that are probably the hits that are good, but the rest of the album is gonna be crap. It is, it’s gonna sound like s**t and who cares about buying that record? So people download the single and then that’s it.”

Backpedaling a bit, Linda added, "I'm not saying that Katy's bad. I mean, she's great for what she does, but she's not reinventing the wheel.  She's not giving substance.  She's giving, y'know, microwave popcorn for you to feast on right at this moment."  Linda finished by saying, "She’s not looking to change the world musically...so all the power to her and everybody who is like that. I’m not saying it’s bad, I’m saying it’s not what I participate in, and that is the reason why the music business is in turmoil, so to say.”

That may be Linda's opinion, but the fact remains that the Recording Academy saw fit to honor Katy's CD Teenage Dream with an Album of the Year nomination.  And there's the fact that five of the album's songs hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- a feat previously accomplished only by Michael Jackson.
