"American Idol" Judges Sick of Hearing Contestants Sing Adele Hit
Frederick M. Brown/Getty ImagesWhen American Idol returns on January 18 for its 11th season, get ready to hear a lot of contestants auditioning with the music of a certain best-selling British singer. Judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez tell TV Guide that during auditions this season, the one musician who all the hopefuls this year were emulating was Adele, and the song they all chose to try out with was "Someone Like You."
"There have been 10 contestants who just nailed it," says Steven. "We're just so tired of hearing it, though. Every three songs, it's that same song." But J-Lo adds, "You have to let them sing, because you never know who will nail it...some people do their own rendition of her who do it beautifully, and then you have the people who fall a bit short."
J-Lo also describes this year's crop of contestants as "hungry," and noted that many who tried out and failed to make it last year are back again, and much improved. But there is a little issue this year, it appears, with fainting. Steven describes contestants during the Hollywood week taping as "literally falling down," while Randy says they were "passing out." J-Lo explains, "Kids were forgetting their words. Shaking in their voice. People we thought were going to be in the Top 10 were just crumbling. We were like, 'What is going on?' I guess it was the pressure of seeing the previous season."
