To mark World Prematurity Day, November 17, Celine Dion has posted a video raising awareness about premature births -- something with which she is, unfortunately, very familiar.
It was in October 2010 that Celine gave birth prematurely to her twin boys Nelson and Eddy. After spending some time in an incubator, the boys eventually went home and today, they're thriving. But Celine doesn't want anyone to have to go through that experience.
In Celine's 30-second video, which she recorded in English and in French, she says, "I share the concerns and fears of every parent." She then goes on to encourage others to get involved, saying, "Let's work together for stronger healthier babies," as issue-related statistics and images of moms and babies flash across the screen. Every year, more than 15 million babies are born prematurely; more than a million die because of prematurity-related complications.
The campaign has a strong social media aspect. Viewers are directed to the Facebook page World Prematurity Day where they can they can join the online discussion by writing about their experiences and posting pictures of their own prematurely-born children, family members or friends. For every story, a pin is added to a world map highlighting each person's post. By clicking on the pin, participants and viewers can connect with and support one another across the globe, and share story links on their own Facebook timelines.
