Sports Car Once Owned by Paul McCartney Brings in About $500K at London Auction

Simon Clay/Courtesy of RM AuctionsIt may have cost them cost nearly a half-million dollars, but now someone can indeed drive Paul McCartney's car anytime they want.  A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 that was originally owned by the Beatles legend was sold to an unnamed buyer at a London automobile auction on Wednesday for 307,000 pounds (about $496,000), not including fees.  According to RM Auctions, which conducted the sale, McCartney bought the blue Sierra sports car in the summer of 1964 and owned it for about six years.  It apparently was one of the rocker's favorites, as he reportedly put more than 40,000 miles on the vehicle during that time.

Among the special options McCartney had included in the luxury car were chrome wire wheels, a Motorola radio and a unique Philips record player.  The auto's original upholstery was leather and features a musical note pattern.  Although the interior eventually was redone, a swatch of the original upholstery was included with the car in case the new owner wants to return it to that design.

The Aston Martin DB5 is perhaps most associated with James Bond, and is featured in several Bond films, beginning with Goldfinger in 1964.
