50th anniversary? For Mick Jagger, it could’ve been the Stones’ second anniversary, because that’s exactly the type of energy he put on display at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday night.
Equally as impressive, guitarists Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards and drummer Charlie Watts' skills didn’t reflect their age, either. The Rolling Stones, replete with a drum line, dancing girls, and guests Mary J. Blige and Gary Clark Jr., blew the lid off of Brooklyn’s brand-new, world-class sports arena.
It was a great night for the legendary band and maybe even a better night for any of the fans in attendance. They witnessed the Stones perform most of their biggest hits, with the opening number, “Get Off of My Cloud,” to “Paint It Black,” and an encore that included “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Jumpin' Jack Flash,” and “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."
Jagger cracked a few jokes during the night. His best line came when he told the crowd the band took the subway to the show. Obviously, the crowd went nuts, and then he chimed in, “I sat next to a nice young man who didn’t know who I was. His name was Jay-Z.” This was a reference to the popular viral video of Jay-Z taking the train to his last concert at the Barclays Center and enjoying a conversation with an elderly woman who had no idea who he was.
Jagger also got quite the reaction when he picked up a guitar for “Miss You” and one of the band's new tracks, “Doom and Gloom,” the latter of which was one of the band’s strongest performances.
Jagger owned the tongue-shaped stage, a brilliant design offering a pretty amazing visual -- especially for those in the cheap seats. Anytime a member of the band came to the edge of the stage, it looked like they were playing on the tip of a tongue.
The week ahead will see the Stones play the 12.12.12 benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, plus two shows in Newark, New Jersey.
