Even before Frank Ocean impressed critics with his Channel Orange album debut, the singer went where few hip-hop and R&B artists had gone before: sharing publicly that his first love was another man. Now, mtvU is honoring Frank for his bravery, naming him the network's 2012 Man of the Year.
Frank opened up about his sexuality in a tumblr post that he published just days before his album's release. Many of his peers in the hip-hop and R&B industry applauded him for his boldness, and droves of fans did the same.
Also being honored by mtvU is Malala Yousafzai, a teen activist in Pakistan, who was shot after she spoke out against the Taliban denying her and other girls an education. She survived, and is being honored as mtvU's 2012 Woman of the Year.
