Lady Gaga Equates Baseball with Pearls, Recalls Scolding from Dad in New "V" Magazine

ABC/ Shareif ZiyadatLast month, Lady Gaga asked fans to submit drawings of her either wearing pearls or flipping the bird at the 2010 Mets-Padres baseball game -- you may recall that that was game where she wore a black bra and gave photographers the finger.  She said she needed the drawings for her monthly column in V magazine, and now we know why.

The new issue of V is the "sports issue," and Gaga's column is indeed illustrated with several fan-created drawings of her flipping the bird at that game.  In her column, Gaga recalls the incident, writing, "It was the first time in nearly two years that I was actually being scolded by my father -- partly for misbehaving in public and partly for attending a Mets game."

She adds, "But that’s the beauty of baseball, isn’t it?  I was able to drown myself in so much whiskey, beer, and Italian sausage that after two years of touring the world I: (A) completely forgot that I am famous, (B) was completely wasted indeed...and (C) am still confused as to how the paparazzi spotted me.  What a lady."

Gaga goes on to reminisce about buying herself a strand of pearls during a trip to Japan and then watching the Brad Pitt baseball-themed flick Moneyball on the plane ride home.  This is where the sports theme comes in.  She writes that she imagined her new pearls were "teeny-tiny baseballs," and realized that the message of the movie is that winning only matters "if you’ve changed the game."  She then asks herself, "How can I hit a home run that will make every player question every run that was ever scored?...How can I change the game?"

Drawing a comparison between herself and a character in Moneyball, who hits a home run and isn't even aware of it, Gaga writes, "In this moment I looked down at my pearls, and I saw all the teeny-tiny home runs I’d hit over the past year...Sometimes my face is buried so deep in the work I forget to look up.  Sometimes I don’t even realize I’ve won, because the stadium is either cheering or screaming so loud it doesn’t even matter."

She finishes by urging fans, "in the spirit of the Super Bowl and all things sporty," to "wear your pearls."  By that, she means,  "Look up, or rather down, at all of your home runs...collect your tiny baseballs, string your pearls, and remember that you are as timeless as the pearls on your neck.  And if you forgot to be a lady and wear them, then shame on you."
