Randy Travis was arrested early Monday morning for public intoxication, ABC News Radio has confirmed. The six-time Grammy winner reportedly had an open bottle of wine with him when he was apprehended by the Sanger, Texas police department in front of a church at approximately 1:30 a.m. ET. Sanger is about an hour north of Dallas. Travis was booked and released.
Travis released a statement Monday saying, "I apologize for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl. I'm committed to being responsible and accountable, and apologize for my actions."
TMZ obtained the police report of Travis's arrest which states the singer was sitting in a black car with no lights on when police spotted him. The officer approached the vehicle and noticed Travis smelled like he'd been drinking. Travis tried to explain that he'd gotten into a fight with his girlfriend but slurred his speech so much the officer couldn't understand what he was saying. Travis apparently stumbled as he got out of the car, and that's when the officer arrested him. His car was towed from the scene and officers poured out the rest of Travis's wine.
In addition to his Grammy awards, Travis, 52, has won over a dozen combined ACM and CMA awards. His most recent album was last year's gospel collection, Blessed Assurance.
