Garbage Frontwoman Shirley Manson: “It’s OK to Be a Bit Odd”

StunvolumeGarbage frontwoman Shirley Manson says that the title of their first album in seven years, Not Your Kind of People, was inspired by an idea for a song suggested by drummer Butch Vig.

"Butch came in one day and he said, 'I've got this title for a song that I think you're really going to like,” Manson tells CNN. “It's we're 'Not Your Kind of People.' And I was like, 'Ooh yeah, I do love that title. Actually, I think that would make a great title for the record!'"

Manson added that the song’s message was the perfect central theme for the album. "I think we've come to the realization that it's OK to be a bit odd," she explains. "It's OK not to fit in, and actually, it's OK if you're not cool."

The singer also says that she’s happy that the band has released Not Your Kind of People through their own record label, Stunvolume. "We are signing the checks on absolutely everything, which is terrifying, but I think nothing ventured in life that doesn't require a little risk is not worth taking,” notes Manson. “I think this time around, what is different is that we're not tied to making ridiculous amounts of profit. That's just not what we're interested in, and it's certainly not why we joined a band in the first place."
