Katy Perry Plugs 3D Concert Film During "Tonight Show" Appearance

NBCKaty Perry and her purple hair visited The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Thursday to promote her 3D concert film, Katy Perry: Part of Me

Katy told Jay she did the documentary to show people what was “underneath the hood.”  The singer said she wanted to show it takes a lot of hard work to achieve success.

The film depicts Katy's life on tour and behind-the-scenes, as well as the emotional fallout from the breakup of her marriage to Russell Brand.  Katy told Jay she included that part of her life because people would have thought it strange not to see it since everyone knew about it.

Katy said she wanted to handle the divorce in the film “very delicately with the most integrity” she could possibly have.  The singer told Jay half of America goes through the same situation that she went through, and she wanted to show others she landed on her feet and “you don’t have to lay down and die even if you feel like you’re going to.”

Katy also told the story of getting her foot in the door of the music business ten years ago when she literally knocked on the door of producer Glen Ballard -- he’s the guy behind Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill -- and sang a song.  He responded by inviting her to L.A.

Katy told Jay she struggled for quite a while following that break, and after being signed and dropped by several record labels, she “caught a lucky star” and found a woman who believed in her.  Katy recalled she was at Columbia Records and about to be dropped when she made a real connection with a woman there named Angelica Cob. Katy told Jay that Cob really believed in her and actually stole her files from Columbia and brought them to another record label.  The rest is history.

Katy also spoke about her strict religious upbringing with her preacher parents.  Kate recalled her mom wouldn’t let her get her nose pierced so the singer did it to herself with a safety pin and some ice.  Katy also revealed she wasn't allowed to listen to anything but gospel music, but the first album she bought was an Incubus record.  Kate recalled sneaking it home past her parents and the CD breaking as she tried to take it out of the package.  Katy also revealed the first concert she attended was a Radiohead show when she was 13.

Katy Perry: Part of Me arrives in theaters July 5.
