R. Kelly Remembers Collaborating With Michael Jackson
Facebook.com/RKellyR. Kelly's autobiography Soula Coaster: The Diary of Me arrives in stores on Thursday, and People has released an excerpt of the book, in which Kells recalls meeting Michael Jackson. "I got to the studio two hours early. I ordered my favorite Chinese food. I was sure to include some vegetarian dishes for Michael," R writes of the day that Michael met him at a studio to record "You Are Not Alone," a song written and produced by Kelly for the King of Pop.
When Michael arrived, R. Kelly says that the singer "looked at least eight feet tall," and wore a black mask over most of his face. "The world's gonna be singing this song," Kelly remembers Michael saying of "You Are Not Alone." In addition to feeling a bit starstruck, Kelly says he was nervous about Michael's chimp, Bubbles. And Kelly was nervous, too, when Michael asked him to sing background on the track.
MJ's next request, however, was a little less daunting. "Is there a mall around here, Rob?...," Kelly remembers Michael asking. "Would you go there with me? I love malls."
The two worked together for three weeks on "You Are Not Alone," and when the track was released, it set a Guinness World Record for becoming the first song to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
