Chaka Khan Kicks Off Program to Keep Kids Out of Jail

Facebook.com/ChakaKhanChaka Khan wants to keep kids out of jails, and she's teamed up with some Los Angeles business and community leaders to see her mission through.  Chaka recently kicked off the No Excuses National Initiative, a pilot program that works to keep juvenile offenders from landing back behind bars.

"In Los Angeles County, more than 60 percent of all incarcerated youth return to custody after their release," Chaka says in a statement.  "These kids need our help."

As part of the No Excuses National Initiative, local business leaders mentor youngsters upon their release from juvenile detention.  A handful of businesses have stepped up to provide support, so now young people throughout Los Angeles will have an opportunity to learn basic skills that will help them land jobs and move ahead.

Chaka is challenging business leaders nationwide to get in on the program.  "More important than your money, these kids need your time and expertise to help them make a successful transition to a better life," she says.  For more information on being a mentor or mentee, check out Chaka's website.
