Gotye on Track to Have the Best-Selling Single Since 1997

Credit: Cybele MalinowksiGotye's monster hit "Somebody That I Used to Know" is now the best-selling song of 2012, moving 4,757,000 copies so far, according to Yahoo!'s Chart Watch blog.   But the song is now on track to set another sales record that hasn't been bested since 1997.

Yahoo!'s Chart Watch reports that in about five weeks, sales of "Somebody That I Used to Know" are likely to pass 5.8 million, which is how many copies Adele sold last year of "Rolling in the Deep."  If that happens, the Gotye hit will become the best-selling song in any calendar year since Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997."  That song, written in memory of the late Princess Diana, sold an incredible 8,111,000 copies in 1997, and all profits went to charity.

Of course, back then, there were no digital downloads -- Elton's sales were all actual CD singles.

In other chart news, LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" just notched its 63rd week on the Billboard Hot 100.  That's the longest that any song by a group or duo has ever remained on the chart.  The record for most weeks by a solo act on the Hot 100 is held by Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" -- it hung around for 76 weeks.
