Ginuwine's "Pony" Gets Sales Boost, Thanks to "Magic Mike"
Twitter.com/GinuwineMore than a decade and a half after Ginuwine unleashed his raunchy debut single, "Pony," the 1996 smash is making big sales, thanks to the stripper flick Magic Mike. Actor Channing Tatum breaks out his sexiest moves to "Pony" in the movie, but since the track isn't featured on the Magic Mike soundtrack, fans have been snatching it up a la carte from digital retailers.
Billboard reports that the single has now captured its best digital sales week ever, selling 13,000 downloads in the week ending July 8, according to Nielsen Soundcan. The week before that, "Pony" moved 9,000 units, according to Nielsen Soundcan. It's important to note, of course, that SoundScan didn't begin tracking digital sales until 2003.
Originally featured on Ginuwine...The Bachelor, "Pony" earned the singer his first Billboard hit. For two weeks the song hung out at #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and climbed to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
