John Lennon Chosen as "NME" Magazine's Ultimate Musical Icon

Vinnie Zuffante/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty ImagesLate Beatles legend John Lennon has been chosen as the Ultimate Musical Icon of the last 60 years in a poll organized by U.K. magazine NME to celebrate its 60th anniversary.  Voting began six months ago, with NME offering an initial list of 60 artists from which readers could pick.  A total of 160,000 votes were cast.

Among the other famous musicians who landed in the top 10 of the poll are David Bowie at #3, late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain at #5 and Jimi Hendrix at #7.  All 60 icons chosen by NME are highlighted in a special issue of the magazine that's available now.

Here are the top 10 vote-getters of NME's Ultimate Musical Icon poll:

2. Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
3. David Bowie
4. Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys)
5. Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
6. Amy Winehouse
7. Jimi Hendrix
8. Morrissey (The Smiths)
9. Noel Gallagher (Oasis)
10. Ian Curtis (Joy Division)
