"The X Factor" Recap: Auditions in Kansas City, San Francisco, Austin
FoxThe X Factor entered its second week of auditions on Wednesday night. Simon Cowell, Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and L.A. Reid visited San Francisco and Austin, Texas.
There were also auditions in Kansas City, but Simon missed them because he was sick. British X Factor judge Louis Walsh filled in for him there.
Here are some of Wednesday's highlights:
-- Rizzloe Jones stunned the panel by telling it he would do a freestyle rap. After he spit rhymes about the show and its judges, Reid told him he admired how brave he was. Britney called him a young Vanilla Ice, and meant it as a compliment. Jones advanced.
-- The extremely-confident CeCe Frey, a 20-year-old mail clerk who had paint on the left side of her face resembling a leopard-print tattoo, flopped with "Unchained Melody," then raised her energy level dramatically with Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man." Brit said CeCe had the looks and the voice to succeed. Demi joked that she had a "girl crush" on CeCe, who will be back.
-- Not only did DeAngelo Wallace fail his audition, he complicated matters for himself by stealing a microphone. He was subsequently arrested by police.
-- A five-person boy band called Citizen covered the 1990s hit "Don't Let Go" by En Vogue. Simon was the lone dissenting voice, saying the act was out of date. Nevertheless, Citizen moved on to the next round.
-- Diamond White, 13, impressed the panel with her version of James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." Demi said she had sparkle and an "X factor." Simon said Diamond proved it's not a man's world after all. We'll see Diamond again.
-- Ally Brooke had a penchant for stretching out notes way more than Simon cared to hear. But she remains alive in the competition.
-- The loveable Panda Ross, 42, had the crowd and the judges eating out of the palm of her hand while singing "Bring It On Home to Me" by Sam Cooke. She cleverly played off the tune's lyrics by singing, "If I win the five million dollars I'll give you jewelry." The panel loved her witty personality and passed her through. Simon even said she sounded like a legend.
Afterward, Panda experienced a coughing fit backstage and was taken away in an ambulance. The show later revealed that she was suffering from pneumonia.
-- Jessica Espinoza closed the episode by belting out Pink's "Nobody Knows." Simon said he loved the raw emotion of the performance. Jessica advanced.
Fox will air more X Factor auditions Thursday night at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
