Gotye Gets Nominated for an Award -- with his Dad
Universal RepublicGotye is used to being nominated for awards for his music, but he's just received a nod for his artistic talent -- and he's sharing that honor with his father.
The ARIA Awards -- which are the Australian Grammys -- has announced the first few nominations in what it calls its "Fine Arts and Artisans" categories, for behind-the-scenes stuff like Best Producer and Best Engineer. One of those categories is Best Cover Art, and Gotye has snagged a nomination for his album Making Mirrors, the disc that features "Somebody that I Used to Know." His dad, Frank de Backer, is nominated with him, because Gotye -- birth name Wally DeBacker -- adapted one of his dad's paintings to create the album's cover, which features geometric shapes and squares in different colors.
The ARIA awards in the Fine Arts and Artisans categories will be handed out October 3 in Sydney, Australia, with the rest of the ARIA nominees announced on that day as well. As one of the most successful Australian musicians working today, Gotye's got a good chance at getting a bunch of those. The main ARIA ceremony will take place November 29 in Sydney.
