Wanna Sell Records? Book the Super Bowl or the Grammys

Atlantic RecordsBruno Mars is set for a major payday, thanks to his upcoming performance at the Super Bowl in February.  That's because, according to Billboard, performing at halftime during the big game is the best way to boost an artist's sales and buzz.  The Super Bowl tops the publication's list of the "Top 10 Platforms that Move Music Now."

According to Billboard, after Beyonce and Destiny's Child appeared at the Super Bowl this past February, they enjoyed a 21% increase in album sales and a 36% increase in downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Next on Billboard's list is a performance on the Grammy Awards.  After this year's telecasts, album sales for artists who appeared increased 17%, and digital track sales by 8%.  Coming in at #3 is something that Lady Gaga will probably be happy to hear, since she just did it this weekend: an appearance on Saturday Night Live.  Two up-and-coming acts who performed on the show earlier this year -- Of Monsters and Men and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis -- saw their album sales increase 78% and 83%, respectively.

Here's the rest of Billboard's list of sales-boosting appearances:

4. Song in a TV commercial that runs during a special event  (Super Bowl, Oscars, Grammys)
5. Home-page placement on iTunes
6. Performance on NBC's The Voice
7. First arena-level headlining tour
8. Performance on MTV Video Music Awards
9. Performance on Coachella Festival main stage
10. High-Rotation TV ad for a leading car company
