Happy 70th Birthday, Joni Mitchell!

Photo: James O'MaraHere's wishing Joni Mitchell a very happy 70th birthday.  The Canadian singer/songwriter is among the most respected and influential artists of her time, responsible for such acclaimed albums as 1970's Ladies of the Canyon, 1971's Blue, 1974's Court and Spark, and 1976's Hejira.

After beginning her career as a folk artist, Mitchell eventually delved into rock and jazz, even recording a collaborative album with renowned jazz bassist Charles Mingus.  Joni's highest-charting single was "Help Me," which reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974.  Among her many other well-known tunes are "Big Yellow Taxi," "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio," "Carey," and "Free Man in Paris."

Many other artists have covered Mitchell's songs, perhaps most famously Judy Collins, who scored a #8 hit with "Both Sides Now" in 1968, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, whose rendition of "Woodstock" peaked at #11 in 1970.

In recent years, Joni has put her music career on the back burner to focus more on one of her other artistic passions: painting.  Her most recent album, Shine, was released in 2007.

Over the years, Mitchell has amassed eight Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.  She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
