If you're looking for a way to spend those gift cards you got for Christmas, Keith Urban has a few music suggestions from outside the country format you might want to check out. He's a big fan of New Zealand teenager Lorde, whose hit "Royals" took over the pop airwaves in 2013.
Keith tells Rolling Stone he admires Lorde's approach to writing about her life. He says, "It's a refreshing change to sort of have an artist talk about the circles she's in and the things she's going through. To write about those things is pretty extraordinary."
Keith was also taken with Kanye West's album, Yeezus, and the indie group Blood Orange's Prince-influenced project Cupid Deluxe. As for his favorite song of the year, Keith selects Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors" because it reminded him of his own struggles to really see himself beyond the mask he's worn in the past.
He explains, "It touches on so many different phases of my life. There's been times when the very thing I was looking for was right inside me. If I just paused long enough to look past the facade, I would have seen the actual person I was looking for. But I was too busy running."
Of course, Keith's own album, Fuse, made several best music of 2013 lists. The latest single from that project, "Cop Car," is now climbing the country chart.
