Why does it seem like music's biggest stars are all over your TV screen during the holidays? Because they know that reminding fans that they've got new albums out during the Christmas shopping season leads to big sales. Just look at Lady Gaga, for example.
Though it debuted at #1 on the charts when it came out in November, Gaga's ARTPOP hasn't really set the charts on fire. However, a key appearance on the season finale of NBC's The Voice gave the disc a big boost. Billboard reports that after Gaga duetted with Christina Aguilera on the finale, ARTPOP experienced a 45% sales increase. Meanwhile, the song she performed with Christina, "Do What U Want," sold 50,000 downloads. That was its second-largest sales week since its release six weeks earlier.
The Voice effect also worked for other performers who appeared on that show's big finale. Celine Dion's album Loved Me Back to Life experienced a 72% sales increase, OneRepublic's disc Native grabbed a 107% sales boost, and Paramore's self-titled album increased its sales by 108%.
However, Justin Timberlake was the biggest beneficiary of a TV appearance. According to Billboard, sales of JT's album The 20/20 Experience -- 2 of 2, jumped by 89% this past week, shooting it from #27 to #19 on the chart. The other album he released this year, The 20/20 Experience, enjoyed a 94% gain, jumping from #94 to #49. It's all because of his highly-rated stint on Saturday Night Live on December 21, which saw him performing two songs and appearing in numerous sketches.
