Madonna, Bruce Springsteen Rule "Billboard's" "Top Money Makers" List

Kevin Mazur/WireImageWhich musicians hauled in the most cold hard cash in the past 12 months?  According to Billboard, it was the Queen of Pop and The Boss.

Billboard tallied the annual earnings of music's top names -- including tour revenue, digital music sales, streaming and subscription revenue -- and found that artists normally earn the most money from playing live.  That's why Madonna tops the magazine's list: she had the year's most successful tour.  Bruce Springsteen, who also had an extremely successful year on the road, came in second.

Madonna earned $34,577,308.62 over the past twelve months, according to Billboard, and over 93% of that came just from her MDNA world tour.  Bruce, meanwhile, brought in $33,443,606.64, of which 92% came from his Wrecking Ball world tour.

Billboard also found that the artists who were most successful on the road in the past year had the poorest record sales.  The reverse is true as well: two artists who didn't tour at all last year -- Taylor Swift and Adele -- made the list because of their formidable record sales.

Here's Billboard's list of the Top 20 Money Makers for the past year:

1. Madonna
2. Bruce Springsteen
3. Roger Waters
4. Van Halen
5. Kenny Chesney
6. Dave Matthews Band
