Ashley Monroe is best known to country fans as one-third of Pistol Annies, her trio with pals Angaleena Presley and Miranda Lambert, but now she's stepping out on her own with a new solo project, Like a Rose, currently in stores. Ashley has known Vince Gill since she moved to Nashville as a teenager, and he was her first and only choice to produce Like a Rose.
Ashley tells ABC News Radio, "I think that I kind of always knew in the back of my mind that's who I'd want to produce a record on me, but I just had to wait for the timing to get right, and it couldn't have been more right."
Ashley has made a second career out of collaborating with everyone from Train to Jack White in the last few years. On Like a Rose, Ashley continues in that collaborative spirit with pal Blake Shelton joining her for the playful, slightly cutting duet "You Ain't Dolly (And You Ain't Porter)."
"It was pretty obvious that it was for me and Blake 'cause that's the kind of relationship we have anyway," Ashley says with a laugh. "If you read the text thread between us, it'd all make sense."
All jokes aside, Ashley is honored to share the mic with Blake, calling him "one of the best country male singers I've ever heard."
Though Ashley is extremely proud of Like a Rose, fans shouldn't worry this album spells the end of Pistol Annies. In fact, the trio has a new album already in the can, and they continue writing new songs all the time.
"I feel like we'll all three continue to do our own things and be together," Ashley says of Pistol Annies' future. "I mean, we'll make it work."
