Last month, a planned cruise featuring some of the biggest hitmakers of the '90s was canceled, and Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, the event's organizer, said it was because fans were scared off by the Carnival Triumph disaster -- what McGrath called "the poop cruise." Now, most of those same bands have regrouped for a package tour....on dry land.
The Under the Sun 2013 tour gets underway with a free July 4 event in Socorro, Texas, and then continues throughout the summer. Taking part are Sugar Ray, of course, but also Smash Mouth, Gin Blossoms, Vertical Horizon and Fastball.
In a statement, McGrath says, "Number one songs from the Nineties, live? Check. A giant party under the summer sun? Check. Five multi-platinum bands with quick changeovers? Check. It's gonna be a bitchin' summer."
"Under The Sun = Fun in the Sun!" adds Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth. "You bring your happy face and we'll bring the party." And Jesse Valenzuela of Gin Blossoms notes, "Five bands, 10 guitars -- too much fun. Under The Sun will be spreading joy to 36 cities. If we don't win the Nobel Peace Prize, we're not gonna be amused!"
