Billy Joel, Aerosmith and Van Halen are in Sydney, Australia this weekend for a special musical event: the inaugural Stone Music Festival, set for Saturday and Sunday at Sydney's ANZ Stadium. Aerosmith and Van Halen will perform on Saturday, while the Piano Man serves as the headliner on Sunday.
The Stone Music fest is named after the landmark 1974 Australian movie Stone, which told the tale of disenfranchised Vietnam War veterans who turn their backs on convention and start their own society based on their passion for motorcycles. The event seeks to bring together music fans of all ages in celebration of freedom and rock 'n' roll.
Joel has been vocal about his performance at the festival serving as sort of a test for whether or not he wants to continue performing live. According to Australia's The Age, at a press conference promoting the concert, Joel said that his attitude about the performance is, "If I suck, I'm not going to do it any more."
After Joel made that comment, Van Halen's David Lee Roth responded, horrified, "You're not gonna do it any more? Like for life? Or you're not gonna do it any more this year?" Joel replied, "If I stop, I'm gonna stop." A disbelieving Roth asked, "Like, permanently stop?" When Joel answered in the affirmative, Roth said, "Hey can we do that? I want to do that!"
