Artists Mourn George Jones's Passing

Gems/Redferns

The news of George Jones's death Friday was felt deeply all over Nashville and the country music community across the nation.  After word went out about his passing, artist reaction began streaming in:

-- Martina McBride got to meet George Jones several times and even performed on his television program, The George Jones Show, in the '90s. Martina has also been singing Jones' duet with Tammy Wynette, "Golden Ring," on the road with George Strait this year, too.

Like everyone in the country music community, Martina was deeply affected by Jones's passing.  She tells ABC News Radio, "I really think George Jones's voice was country music. I've spent so many hours listening to George, and he just knew his way around a country song. There's a lot of people that can sing country music, but there's something about George, his voice, he just knew what to do with a country song. To make it come alive, and to have so much emotion, and just make you feel it."

Everyone who knew George Jones knows his spunky wife Nancy, who is credited with keeping the country legend on the straight and narrow after drugs and alcohol nearly took his life in the early '80s.  Martina says, "All of our thoughts and prayers are with her and the family and we are grateful to her for helping him and for keeping him around for us to enjoy for many more years. And for really being his salvation in a way."

It's hard for Martina to pick her favorite George Jones song, but if she had to choose one it would be "The Grand Tour."  "It just kills me every time," says Martina. "It's so perfect. You know, the way he sings it. Oh, it's just -- for me, that's my ultimate George Jones song."

Garth Brooks -- "The greatest voice to ever grace country music will never die.  Jones has a place in every heart that ever loved any kind of music."

Loretta Lynn -- "It’s a sad day for country music and a great loss for those of us who knew him. I was blessed to call George my friend. He was one of the best country singers there ever was. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Nancy, and all of his family. It’s a sad, sad day.”

country vocalist and taught me so much about what the voice can really do if you let it. He was a good man, he was passionate about country music, and made me want to be a better artist every time I listened to one of his records. Heaven got a little countrier today. We'll miss you George!"

He had grown into a real good man. Of course, he’ll always be the greatest singer and interpreter of real country music – there’ll never be another. Like the song says, ‘You know this old world is full of singers, but just a few are chosen to tear your heart out when they sing. Imagine life without them…Who’s gonna fill their shoes.’”
