Sara Bareilles & Fun. Guitarist Write "Civil Rights Anthem" Together

Epic RecordsSara Bareilles just released "Brave," the first single from her upcoming album The Blessed Unrest, and already, it's hit the top 10 on iTunes.  Sara wrote the song with Jack Antonoff, the guitarist of the Grammy-winning band fun., who says to him, it's much more than a simple pop tune.

In a new webisode, Sara reveals that the lyrics for "Brave" were partially inspired by a close friend of hers who was, as she says, "struggling with coming out."  Jack says that's why the song is so meaningful to him, and will be to others as well.

"Brave is obviously a song that's gonna mean a lot to a lot of people," says Jack in the webisode. "But for me, I'll always sort of internalize it just as a real civil rights anthem at a time where there are no civil rights anthems, and there's a giant need for a civil rights anthem."

Jack, who dates Emmy-winning Girls star Lena Dunham, isn't gay himself, but he and fun. helped create the Ally Coalition, which supports rights for gays and lesbians.

The Blessed Unrest will be out July 16.
