Whether you love her or hate her for it, Tamar Braxton does not bite her tongue. In an interview with Ebony, Tamar reveals that the outspokenness she's exhibited on Braxton Family Values episode after episode is something that she developed after suffering through a pair of abusive past relationships.
Tamar touched on the subject during an episode of the spin-off show Tamar and Vince, revealing that one ex-boyfriend dragged her out of her apartment by her hair. "I’m not all the way comfortable with sharing a lot of what happened to me, but what I said was true. When I’m ready to talk about my abusive past I will, I’m sorry that I’m not. But if it wasn’t for (God), I wouldn’t be here," Tamar tells Ebony.
Those painful experiences set the stage for a new Tamar, specifically one who would speak up for herself. "I haven’t always been vocal about my feelings, especially in a relationship. Now, I make sure that I’m very vocal about my feelings, everybody knows how I feel. Sometimes it’s over the top and most of the time it’s ‘Team Too-Much,’" she says.
Tamar tells Ebony that a year or so before Braxton Family Values premiered in 2011, she was still figuring out how to be a confident person. "I was faking it til I make it, pretty much," she says, adding that her husband Vince Herbert, who she married in 2008, has been a welcome support. "He's helped me with accepting what happened to me and helped me realize that that’s not my make-up, (being abused) is not who I am, it hasn't hindered who I am, it hasn’t stopped my integrity. I really appreciate him more and more everyday." The couple are expecting their first child.
Also in the interview, Tamar talks about her struggle with Vitiligo, a skin disorder that causes skin to lose its pigment. Tamar denies rumors that she's been bleaching her skin, explaining, she's been doing the opposite. "I tan just so I can have a better tone on my skin, boo!" she says.
The singer also says that she's never had plastic surgery. "I had a nose procedure done because I had to. I had no cartilage in my nose, I have a piece of cartilage from my ear put into my nose," she says. Of course, after she has a baby, she tells Ebony, she might consider getting her breasts done. "Who knows if my breasts gonna go down to my ankles -- I can’t do that!"
Tamar's new album Love & War is due out later this year.
