Billy Talbot, the longtime bassist of Neil Young's backing band, Crazy Horse, has just released a new album titled On the Road to Spearfish with his side group, The Billy Talbot Band. A follow-up to 2004's Alive in the Spirit World, the nine-track collection is available now as a digital download, which also includes high-definition companion videos for each song featuring footage from the recording sessions.
On the Road to Spearfish was inspired by the open spaces in and around Spearfish, South Dakota, where Talbot helped his wife restore a homestead that she's owned for quite a while. Reminiscent to the work of Crazy Horse, the album features several epic songs that run for more than nine minutes, including the title track.
Talbot also says that a major inspiration for the new record was the late Warren Zevon's final album, 2003's The Wind. "When I first heard Warren's last record, the starkness and the raw emotion, I really felt that and got into it," he explains. "That quality, that's what I'm going for."
