Madonna to Receive Top Touring Honor at "Billboard" Music Awards; Raises $7 Million for Charity with Painting Sale
Madonna's MDNA Tour last year was a huge success, and she'll be honored for that accomplishment at the Billboard Music Awards, airing live from Las Vegas May 19 on ABC.
Madonna will receive the Top Touring Artist Award, recognizing the fact that the MDNA tour grossed over $305 million from 88 sold-out shows for 2.2 million fans. A DVD of the tour is expected soon.
In other Madonna news, a painting she owns by the acclaimed artist Fernand Léger was sold at auction at Sotheby's on Tuesday for over seven million dollars. Proceeds will go to the singer's Ray of Light charity foundation to support girls’ education projects in the Middle East and South Asia.
On her Facebook page, Madonna wrote, "I Hope to make many girls smile like Malala all around the world! Thanks to the amazing sale of my paining at Sotheby's we can make this happen soon! Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen! Art equals Revolution!"
Malala is a teenage Pakistani schoolgirl who survived an assassination attempt on her way home from school. Madonna often spoke about her onstage during the MDNA tour, saying she was outraged that women and girls in that part of the world are targets of assassination simply for attending or teaching school.
