If you couldn't get tickets to see Madonna's sold-out MDNA tour -- the highest-grossing tour of last year -- you'll be able to check it out next month at home. EPIX will premiere a film of the concert, shot mostly in Miami but also in other locations, on June 22 at 8 p.m. ET.
The concert features Madonna performing some of her big hits, including "Vogue," "Like a Prayer" and "Hung Up." During the tour, she also performed a mash-up of her hit "Express Yourself" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," to comment on the latter song's similarity to hers, but it's not clear if that sequence will be included in the telecast.
A big chunk of the MDNA show focuses on material from Madonna's MDNA album, and it's all presented with eye-popping, often controversial, state-of-the-art visuals; a seven-member band; and 27 dancers wearing 1,500 costumes. Madonna described the tour as "the hardest but most thrilling and challenging show I've ever done."
It's fitting that Madonna's concert would air on EPIX, because the network originally launched back in 2009 with a telecast of Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour: it premiered the first night the channel was on the air. "We are very excited to have her back on the network," says an executive in a statement.
Usually, a concert film on EPIX is a precursor to a DVD release, and fans know that Madonna has been working on just such a project. No word on when that's coming out, though.
