Steven Van Zandt, Journey Comment on James Gandolfini's Death

Heidi Gutman/NBCSteven Van Zandt is paying his respects to James Gandolfini following the actor's sudden death Wednesday at the age of 51.

The Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band member worked closely with Gandolfini as an actor on The Sopranos, playing Silvio Dante. Van Zandt tweeted Wednesday night, "I have lost a brother and a best friend. The world has lost one of the greatest actors of all time. Maureen and I send our deepest sympathy and love to Deborah, Michael, Lily, and all of Jimmy's family."

Journey, whose hit song "Don't Stop Believin'" was memorably played in the final moments of The Sopranos' much-debated fade-to-black ending in 2007, has also commented on Gandolfini's death.  In a statement posted on their website, the band says, "It's truly an honor to have been able to share one of the greatest moments ever in TV history with James Gandolfini. He was an amazing actor -- taken way too young -- and he'll be missed. Our condolences go out to his family."

Aerosmith's Joe Perry and Steven Tyler also have saluted the Emmy winner on Twitter. Perry writes, "James Gandolfini what a nice guy, so funny and sweet. He will be sorely missed. Our deepest condolences to his family."  Tyler tweeted, "YOU WERE...AND ALWAYS WILL BE...A TRUE GIFT! #jamesgandolfini."

Slash tweeted, "Terribly sad news about James Gandolfini's passing. Such a fantastic actor. RIP."
