Lionel Richie's hilarious Australian TV ad for Tap King, an in-home draft beer dispenser, has been generating a lot of buzz online -- it features a guy opening his fridge, and seeing Richie, sitting at a piano, singing, "Hello, is it me you're looking for?" while handing over a frosty pint. But it turns out filming the video was a real '80s flashback for Lionel, and not just because he was singing that song.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that while Richie was shooting the commercial in Los Angeles earlier this year, the guy who was going to be his "hand double" arrived on the set...and it was Wayne Ward, one of the actors who'd co-starred in Lionel's original "Hello" video back in '84.
A beer company spokesman told the paper, "We had no idea of the connection. It was just a complete coincidence. Lionel did a double-take and remembered him straight away. They thought it was bizarre that the song had somehow paired them together again three decades later."
According to the paper, the beer company paid an estimated $1.5 million to get the rights to the song...and Richie...for the ad.
