Jack White has been revealed to be the anonymous donor who paid the $142,000 in taxes to save Detroit's Masonic Temple from foreclosure, the Detroit Free Press is reporting. In honor of his generosity, the Temple's Cathedral Theater will now be renamed the Jack White Theater.
"Jack's donation could not have come at a better time and we are eternally grateful to him for it," says Detroit Masonic Temple Association President Roger Sobran. "Jack's magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words."
White, a native of Detroit, has a long history with the 1,586-seat theater: he performed at venue several times and his mother had previously worked there as a usher.
