Katy Perry Calls Herself a "Plain Jane," Says New Record Will Reflect the "Fun" in Her Life

Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesWhether dressed in high fashion gowns on a red carpet, or cartoonish costumes and candy-colored wigs onstage, Katy Perry never looks anything approaching "normal."  But the bodacious and beautiful singer, who regularly lands on those "100 Sexiest" lists in men's magazines, insists that there's nothing special about her looks at all.

Speaking to the British paper The Independent to promote her new move The Smurfs 2, Katy says, "I'm just a normal girl, just a Plain Jane, who watered a seed and watched it grow.  If I can do it, anyone can.  Girls don't need to be physically perfect to succeed."

In fact, she says, when it comes to acting, it's not the great silver screen beauties who she admires, but the women who are more real.

"The comic actresses I admire are women like Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Rebel Wilson – girls that aren't afraid to be self-deprecating, and they're OK with looking at themselves in bad lighting, women who are more interested in the joke rather than in their presentation,” she explains. "I like the idea in acting to play the opposite of how I present myself, as some kind of unrecognizable character."

Katy also talked to the paper about her new album, which is expected to be released later this year.  Asked if the disc will, like Adele's 21, reflect all the heartbreak she's gone through since her last record, Katy replies, "You know, not everything in life is terrible, although I am not singing about how fabulous everything is all the time. I have a lot of fun in my life, and I want my records to reflect that.”
